Calgary Parking Zones Explained (ParkPlus & Permits)
Updated June 1, 2026
Calgary’s on-street parking runs on the ParkPlus system, operated by Calgary Parking (the Calgary Parking Authority). Instead of feeding a meter at your stall, you pay by entering a zone number. Here’s how it works and the rules that trip people up.
How ParkPlus works
On-street parking is divided into pricing areas, each broken into numbered ParkPlus zones. Every block or lot is signed with its zone number.
To pay, enter that zone number at a pay machine, in the ParkPlus app, or by phone. Your vehicle and the pay machine must be in the same pricing area.
Rates vary by time of day and pricing area, and are shown on the machine. The minimum purchase is $0.50.
You pre-pay for your estimated time and there’s no refund for unused time — but you can start a new session if you’re still within the posted maximum stay. Machines take coin and card; some are tap-only.
Residential Parking Permit (RPP) zones
Calgary has roughly 80 Residential Parking Zones, usually near hospitals, LRT stations and the downtown edges. The typical sign reads “2 hour parking except by permit,” and permit holders are exempt from the time limit.
Crucially, RPP zones are enforced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — including evenings and weekends. If you don’t have a permit, don’t exceed the posted time limit, even at night.
Free on-street conditions
In the downtown core, on-street parking is generally free after 6pm Monday to Saturday and all day Sunday. Loading zones allow free parking up to 20 minutes. These conditions vary by zone, so always confirm on the sign.
